For Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and Culinary students, visiting a food expo could probably be the most enticing tour.

Food and beverage are two essential and exciting parts of their industry. You may not be a possible buyer in the expo but being in a gathering of buyers and sellers in the food and beverage industry makes the experience worthwhile.

That is why we thought you might be interested in visiting the World Food Expo 2010 on Aug. 4-7, 2010 happening simultaneously at the World Trade Center and at the SMX Convention Center. The event is dubbed as “The Ultimate Food Experience”. The WOFEX also introduces the 1st Philippine Culinary Cup where the best people in the culinary industry get to compete and emerge as champion.

One great way to spend summer vacation is through camping. Kids, most especially, will surely have a wonderful experience if you bring them to camp sites. And if you are just around the Metro Manila area, you don’t have to go too far for camping because an ideal camp site is situated right at the heart of the metro!

La Mesa Eco Park is in Quezon City. This watershed is the primary source of drinking water of millions of residents in Metro Manila. La Mesa Eco Park will give you real forest experience which makes it an ideal camping site. It has overnight camping facilities and other attractions for campers to enjoy.

Here are some of the attractions of La Mesa Eco Park (taken from their official website):

Lopez Picnic Grounds – Five hectares of picnic spots with grilling facilities underneath a forest of varied trees.

Salt Water Swimming Pool – Probably the only salt water pool that is open to the public. Salt granules are used instead of chlorine making the water safer and less toxic.

Superferry Boating Lagoon – To experience and enjoy a paddle boat ride, one once had to trek all the way to Baguio’s Burnham Park to do so. Now this popular activity is available in Quezon City.

Fishing Lagoon – Fishing is another very popular to-do at the park.

Petron Fitness and Mountain Bike Trail – Here, one can enjoy a full-body workout under the shade of trees. The fitness trail has 17 exercise stations and connects to a forested 1.2 km mountain bike trail.

Shell Flower Terraces – Two hectares of flower terraces. This is actually the dam wall of the reservoir.

Ecomuseum – A museum dedicated to environmental education and biodiversity conservation.

Butterfly Trail and Hatchery – An educational walk through the wonderful, colorful world of butterflies.

Invite your friends or family members and have this alternative recreation activity for summer. La Mesa Eco Park is another venue for environmental education wherein you can build happy and exciting memories with your favorite people.

THE VISITA IGLESIA is a traditional Filipino practice of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday. It is said to begin from the early Christian practice of visiting the seven great basilicas in Rome.

The Laguna de Bay Loop is one famous route where some of the finest heritage churches are located.

This is a straightforward route; simply follow the National Highway along the towns of Laguna de Bay. Start either in Laguna via the South Luzon Expressway, or in Rizal if you go through the Antipolo side.

If one does not have a private vehicle, one can board jeepneys that pass from one town to another.

Other magnificent churches worth visiting in Laguna during the Visita Iglesia, according to its tourism office, are Our Lady of Nativity Parish church in Pangil; Sta. Rosa de Lima Parish church, Sta. Rosa City; St. Policarp Parish church, Cabuyao; St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Calamba City; Immaculate Concepcion Parish church, Los Baños; and St. Paul the Hermit Parish church, San Pablo City.

According to parish priests Noel Artillaga (Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Pagsanjan) and Philip Atienza (St. John the Baptist Church in Liliw), most of these colonial-era churches have undergone indiscriminate renovations, or the construction of new structures as the old ones crumbled due to natural and man-made calamities.

Lovers of Philippine ecclesiastical architecture will truly have an inspiring spiritual experience in Laguna. Start your journey early so you can complete your Visita Iglesia and see the other attractions of the province.

The last thing that you would do before returning home from a tour is to bring home a souvenir, something that would remind you of that wonderful vacation. What we Pinoys term as ‘pasalubong’

Baguio City is not just about strawberries and its elevated location. Baguio also boasts of souvenir items and delicacies that tourists patronize.

Baguio Delicacies

1. Strawberry. Either fresh or jam, it’s surely a sweet treat.
2. Ube halaya (purple yam jam)
3. Peanut brittle
4. Lengua de Gato
5. ‘Sundot Kulangot’ (coco jelly)
6. Choco flakes (now has the white choco flavor)
7. Bee honey
8. Fruits. Aside from strawberry, you should also try the seedless Sagada oranges, Sablan bananas, and many others.
9. Vegetables. Baguio is one of the top producers of vegetables in the country.
10. Benguet coffee.
11. Baguio longganisa. It has a strong garlic flavour and is usually short, rounded sausage sold in links, which the locals refer to as ‘short-ganisa’.

Silver, Ornaments, Handmade Products

Silverworks are famous souvenir items especially for teenagers. They vary from necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. You can find lots of these in almost all of the tourist spots in the city.

Another top souvenir item is the Baguio broomstick or the ‘walis tambo’. This is every household’s best friend. It has a wooden handle covered with woven stings that read ‘Baguio City’.

Hand-woven products such as mats, robes, and beddings, are made by Benguet women and have been part of their tradition for years now.

Metal crafts are for decorative purposes. These crafts are made of beaten copper and other metals and are sold in the city market and at the Mines View Park.

Furniture and Wood Carvings

Furniture from this region is popular with foreign tourists and is made of strong Philippine wood such as narra, kamagong, and molave.

Wood carvings are also one of the best-sellers in Baguio like the naughty barrel man and the naked woman back scratcher.

No matter how many of these souvenir items you bring home, the important thing is that you had a wonderful Baguio trip to remember. Plan your next exciting tour with Veniz Tours!

Batangas is popular for numerous resorts budding like mushrooms around the province. But apart from these, Batangas also boasts of different recreation and heritage spots where students and traditional tourists could go to. Learn more about the balisong and kapeng barako as you discover Batangas with Veniz Tours.

TAAL VOLCANO and TAAL LAKE

Topping the list is of course, the Taal Volcano which gracefully sits at the heart of the serene Taal Lake. Although known to be the world’s smallest, nobody could belittle Taal Volcano because it is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines, also belonging to the Pacific Ring of Fire. The current famous activity in Taal Volcano is trekking in its crater! Yes, there is another lake inside the crater, a sulphuric lake to be exact, where you can start another adventure after tramping around the volcano.

TAAL HERITAGE VILLAGE

If you want to travel back in time and experience the old Batangas vibe, walk through the streets of Taal Heritage Village where you can still see some houses preserved from the Spanish era up to the present times. Inside the village, you can find the Leon Apacible historical landmark, Marcela Agoncillo Museum, Escuela Pia, Our Lady of Caysasay Church, and Basilica of St. Martin de Tours.

ST. MARTIN DE TOURS

Built in 1575 and located in San Nicolas, Taal, Batangas, St. Martin De Tours (commonly known as Taal Basilica) is the largest church in Asia with the height of 96 meters and width of 45 meters. It was destroyed in 1754 by the Taal Volcano eruption and was restored in 1755.

CASA DE SEGUNDA

Located at Calle Rizal, Lipa City, this is the ancestral house of Segunda Katigbak, Jose Rizal’s first love. The Katigbak clan is one of the famous families in Batangas. The house is now considered as a historical museum. Frequent visitors are students, historians, and artists who would like to have a deeper discovery of Jose Rizal and Segunda Katigbak’s past.

MABINI SHRINE

Visitors can learn more about Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic, as you walk inside the shrine that houses the hero’s personal belongings, his writings, and his remains. The shrine is situated at Mabini’s hometown, Talaga, Tanauan.

PASTOR HOUSE

A turn-of the-century house, this was formerly owned by Alejo Acosta, Batangas City barrio captain in 1883. According to old accounts, William Howard Taft was planned to be assassinated by a sniper in this house but the plan failed and until now, the bullet is still incised in one of the house’s doors.

Batangas is another ideal field trip destination for Engineering students. Aside from the different historical places and alluring beaches that the province boasts of, Batangas is also a home of several industries that students of Engineering may visit and explore.

Among these industries are; Shell Eastern Gas, Philippines Tabangao Special Export Processing Zone, Pilipinas Shell Refinery, Batangas Power Corporation, JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation, General Milling Corporation, Pacific Flour Mills, Chemphil Bulk Terminal, Himmel Industries, Elite Manufacturing, Lima Technology Park and the International Port of Batangas.

Meanwhile, exposure to these industries would give students of engineering a feel of the hardcore engineering world. Planning trips to industries is a wonderful way to expose students to design and engineering that would further give them a real design and discovery experience.

Field trips therefore should be organized in a way that it would give students a unique opportunity to experience engineering in its truest sense. Like what we, in Veniz Tours do whenever we customize field trips for Engineering students of different colleges and universities here in Luzon.

Since Electronics and Communication Engineering course prepares students for a wide range of practical electronics jobs ranging from circuit analysis to digital design, control and robotics, studio tours at GMA7 and ABS-CBN2 could one of the relevant activities for ECE students.

GMA 7 NETWORK CENTER
The GMA Network Center is equipped with MARC (Multiple Automated Recorder Cassette) System with a D3 format digital video recorder and a Broadcast Automation System that allows the network to manage live feeds and international feeds that will be carried out to GMA Pinoy TV subscribers around the world.

The GMA compound has seven studios, three of which (Studios 1, 2 and 3) are in the new network center, two (Studios 4 and 5) in the new GMA Network Studios Building, and two (Studios A and B) in the old GMA Building. The Center serves as the Corporate Headquarters for the network and also houses radio stations DZBB and 97.1 Barangay LS, as well as the newsroom.

Although the Network Center was inaugurated in 2000, GMA has held office in its current EDSA headquarters since 1957, having moved from the Calvo Building in Escolta, Manila (where the network, then known as the Loreto de F. Hemedes, Inc., later renamed Republic Broadcasting System, had its first studios and corporate offices since its inception in 1950).

In 2006, On an 18,404-square-meter complex GMA built a 3,000-square meter 4-storey structure beside the old network complex. The structure houses two state-of-the art soundstages, one of which can accommodate up to 1,000 studio audience. The new building, dubbed the GMA Network Studios, also houses studio support and set construction facilities, technical equipment for broadcast and theater systems, props storage, garage areas, rehearsal rooms, talent dressing and makeup rooms, as well as administrative and production offices. A bridge also connects the new building to the rest of the compound.

ABS-CBN 2 NETWORK CENTER
ABS-CBN is principally involved in television and radio broadcasting, as well as the production of television programming for domestic and international audiences and other related businesses.
At the heart of ABS-CBN’s new capabilities are its technical equipment and systems. Consisting of a new master routing system. A 400×400 input/output matrix, has full stereo-audio capability and also provides additional levels of tally, serial control, machine control, and SMPTE time-code functions. The TOC houses 125 equipment racks providing space for a control system for studio and post-production; 200 stereo-audio distribution amplifiers; 325 video distribution amplifiers; a 2,880-position video patchbay; and a 3,380-position stereo audio patch field. The camera control center supports a total of 27 cameras, assignable to any studio. Linking the entire production and technical complex is a cable management system consisting of more than 50,000 meters (165,000 ft) of 8281 double-shielded coax cable; 106,000 meters (350,000 ft) of 8451 shielded audio cable; 5,000 meters (17,000 ft) of serial control cable; and 12,000 meters (40,000 ft) of triax camera cable. Post-production facilities include six computer-edit-equipped suites, with the 28 VTRs assignable to any suite. There are also an additional 18 A/B roll-edit suites. Each of the eight studios is equipped with a minimum of three cameras, with the capability of expansion to six cameras each. Individual studio control rooms include dual mix/effects switchers; dual channel DVE systems; 24-channel stereo-audio mixing boards; dual channel character generators; multichannel facility intercom; and remote serial machine control. New studio lighting includes remote-controlled motorized battens and a 3,200K SCR programmable lighting control system. This alleviated the requirement for lengthy testing and troubleshooting at the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Manila.

ABS-CBN’s facility is among the most sophisticated broadcast centers in the Pacific Rim and among the most modern in the world. It is capable of producing and airing multiple, simultaneous live and recorded productions (from and to any part of the world). The enhancement and digitalization of the Broadcast Center has enabled the network to respond to a diverse market’s rapidly growing demand for a greater variety of broadcast programming.

These two largest networks in the Philippines, the GMA7 and ABS-CBN2, are open to public, specifically to students who might want to learn more about communication systems.

If you think you’ve had enough animal adventure, we say there’s more! Let’s now get up close with marine creatures in Ocean Adventure.

Have a new friend. Watch the Dolphin Show. This probably is the most famous attraction of the Ocean Adventure. Here, you’ll certainly be amazed as the dolphins do their tricks. This is a perfect bonding activity for parents and their kids.

Save marine creatures. Be a Sea Lion Marine Patrol member.
Next to dolphins, another set of aquatic creatures to watch for are the South American Sea Lion Marine Patrol. Like the Dolphin Show, the Sea Lion Marine Patrol Show will not only present the fun activities these aquatic animals can do but will also bring awareness for viewers that we must help in the preservation of marine life.

Be in the sea without being drenched.
How? Visit the World of the Discovery Aquarium and come closer to different marine creatures in their own habitat. See them up close as you walk through the airconditioned aquarium and learn of the ways on how to help protect them.

Be a hero. WIN a membership for a cause.Help save injured animals and restore them back to wellness by being part of Ocean Adventure and the NGO Wildlife in Need (WIN)’s team-up for this very good cause. Animals that are not capable of surviving in the wild anymore are kept under the guidance of the WIN Rescue Center. See these animals and get to know some information on how to take care of them.

Learning is absolutely fun!
Got lots of still unanswered questions about the marine life? Drop by the Learning Center and find the answers to your questions through fun activities and relevant talks by the Park Guides.
Ocean Adventure is not just a place for recreation. It is also an avenue for advocating environmental awareness specifically on the preservation and protection of the marine life.
