For Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and Culinary students, visiting a food expo could probably be the most enticing tour.

Food and beverage are two essential and exciting parts of their industry. You may not be a possible buyer in the expo but being in a gathering of buyers and sellers in the food and beverage industry makes the experience worthwhile.

That is why we thought you might be interested in visiting the World Food Expo 2010 on Aug. 4-7, 2010 happening simultaneously at the World Trade Center and at the SMX Convention Center. The event is dubbed as “The Ultimate Food Experience”. The WOFEX also introduces the 1st Philippine Culinary Cup where the best people in the culinary industry get to compete and emerge as champion.

Batangas is another ideal field trip destination for Engineering students. Aside from the different historical places and alluring beaches that the province boasts of, Batangas is also a home of several industries that students of Engineering may visit and explore.

Among these industries are; Shell Eastern Gas, Philippines Tabangao Special Export Processing Zone, Pilipinas Shell Refinery, Batangas Power Corporation, JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation, General Milling Corporation, Pacific Flour Mills, Chemphil Bulk Terminal, Himmel Industries, Elite Manufacturing, Lima Technology Park and the International Port of Batangas.

Meanwhile, exposure to these industries would give students of engineering a feel of the hardcore engineering world. Planning trips to industries is a wonderful way to expose students to design and engineering that would further give them a real design and discovery experience.

Field trips therefore should be organized in a way that it would give students a unique opportunity to experience engineering in its truest sense. Like what we, in Veniz Tours do whenever we customize field trips for Engineering students of different colleges and universities here in Luzon.

Here are some tips on what to bring when going on a field trip. You don’t want a stressful trip right? So you may consider the following:

1. Waiver
A waiver releases the school or university, its representatives and/or employees from liability for any injury to student/s while attending the following activity, including travel to and from said activity. Every college or University should see to it that students have submitted waivers before going on a field trip.

2. Medical Forms
Sometimes, field trips do encounter some health related emergencies too. During such cases, medical information reflected on students medical forms will be able to inform teachers or medical practitioners about important information (background, allergies, pre-existing conditions) about the student, specially if the student is unconscious.

3. First Aid Kit
It is likewise important that each student has first aid kit. The kit should contain medications that they need like paracetamol, ibuprofen and loperamide just in case they would need it. You may also include alcohol for sanitation and insect repellant lotion for mosquitoes and other insects.

4. Extra Clothes, Cash, and Snacks
It is always better to be prepared than sorry so you might as well bring this during your field trip. Clothes just in case there would be a need for you to change, cash, so you can buy what you need and other pasalubongs, and snacks to keep your energy high all trough out the trip.

5. Pen and Paper
Of course, field trips are not created solely for fun. And so, jot down pertinent infos with your pen and paper.

6. For faculty members in charge:
A “Hot File” — a plastic, sealable file or large manila envelope to transport the following important documents:

Emergency contact information for your school and school system
List of students who must take medication during the trip

Checklist of all students
Extra cash for emergency situations
Contact information of site contact(s), i.e., name, phone number, role, and office location on site.
Trip itinerary
Waiver

Field trips or educational tours play an important role in students learning. Through field trips, students will have a chance to see their future real world — the mainstream. All programs and courses from universities and colleges should have included some educational activities like field trip because learning is deemed effective when students get to see and experience the actual working ground.

One of the most in demand courses here in the Philippines today is BS HRM – tourism. This course has advanced over other used to be top courses in the country like Nursing and Computer Science. Now, a number of places, attractions, hotels, restaurants and other spots remain unexplored–places with more than 101 amazing facts and stories to offer to our growing number of tourism students.

Students based in Luzon don’t need to go as far as Visayas, Mindanao or other countries like Singapore and China to learn. We have places like Vigan, Tuguegarao, Baguio, Mountain Province, Subic, Pampangga, Tarlac, Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite that can be visited. Not to mention Metro Manila where a number of five star hotels can be found. Of course, it is likewise important to explore other places and countries but, as a student with not enough cash to spend yet, going to such places could be a problem. So the idea is, why not go and explore the places near you first. There are still a lot to learn, to discover, and to love about our locality and nearby provinces.

One of the most visited places in Luzon is Baguio – the summer capital of the Philippines. Some of Baguio’s places of interest include the Baguio Cathedral, a majestic church build on top of a hill overlooking the entire city’s business district; just below it is Session Road, the city’s colorful main avenue with a number of business establishments and restaurants. Burnham Park, another popular tourist attraction, boasts of tree-lined streets, a man-made lake and a children’s playground that even adults can enjoy. The former military recreational park, Camp John Hay, is another place that tourists go to. Wright Park, Mines View Park, the Botanical Garden, among others, are also some places that travelers visit while in Baguio.

Further up north, tourism students may also find the Banaue Rice Terraces magnificent. This popular northern destination was carved out of the hillside by the local people more than a thousand years ago using their bare hands and primitive tools. The Banaue Rice Terraces was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Its natural grandeur and splendor also makes it one of the Wonders of the World.

Meanwhile, the pristine shore line of La Union, situated only an hour and a half from Baguio, is definitely a must for see for tourism students. The coast line boasts with clean beaches, fresh catch from the sea, beachfront hotels and cabanas, and very friendly people. This particular northern tourist destination also offers a number of water activities such as surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and aqua cycling.

Vigan, on the other hand, is another place that should be visited by tourism students. Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia with a unique European atmosphere. Several museums exist for the many national heroes that were born here. Vigan is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the Philippines. Old Vigan Colonial Houses, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Palacio de Arzobispado and Burgos National Museum are among the places of great historical accounts that can be found in Vigan.

Zambales offers wonderful places too. From its clear beaches up to the ever popular Mt. Pinatubo, tourism students are sure to find this place a good destination. Subic, for one offers a lot to tourists. They have the Extreme Adventure Park, Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) Camp, Reme Field Sports Complex, El Kabaya Riding Stables, Hill 394 Forest Park, Subic International Raceway, Subic Le-Man’s Go Cart Track, Ocean Adventure Amusement/ theme Park, Zoobic Safari, Jungle Joe’s World not to mention the first rate beach resorts located within the area.

So again, before spending oodles of money for out of the country trip, have yourself witness the magnificence of these places right here in Luzon.

Since Electronics and Communication Engineering course prepares students for a wide range of practical electronics jobs ranging from circuit analysis to digital design, control and robotics, studio tours at GMA7 and ABS-CBN2 could one of the relevant activities for ECE students.

GMA 7 NETWORK CENTER
The GMA Network Center is equipped with MARC (Multiple Automated Recorder Cassette) System with a D3 format digital video recorder and a Broadcast Automation System that allows the network to manage live feeds and international feeds that will be carried out to GMA Pinoy TV subscribers around the world.

The GMA compound has seven studios, three of which (Studios 1, 2 and 3) are in the new network center, two (Studios 4 and 5) in the new GMA Network Studios Building, and two (Studios A and B) in the old GMA Building. The Center serves as the Corporate Headquarters for the network and also houses radio stations DZBB and 97.1 Barangay LS, as well as the newsroom.

Although the Network Center was inaugurated in 2000, GMA has held office in its current EDSA headquarters since 1957, having moved from the Calvo Building in Escolta, Manila (where the network, then known as the Loreto de F. Hemedes, Inc., later renamed Republic Broadcasting System, had its first studios and corporate offices since its inception in 1950).

In 2006, On an 18,404-square-meter complex GMA built a 3,000-square meter 4-storey structure beside the old network complex. The structure houses two state-of-the art soundstages, one of which can accommodate up to 1,000 studio audience. The new building, dubbed the GMA Network Studios, also houses studio support and set construction facilities, technical equipment for broadcast and theater systems, props storage, garage areas, rehearsal rooms, talent dressing and makeup rooms, as well as administrative and production offices. A bridge also connects the new building to the rest of the compound.

ABS-CBN 2 NETWORK CENTER
ABS-CBN is principally involved in television and radio broadcasting, as well as the production of television programming for domestic and international audiences and other related businesses.
At the heart of ABS-CBN’s new capabilities are its technical equipment and systems. Consisting of a new master routing system. A 400×400 input/output matrix, has full stereo-audio capability and also provides additional levels of tally, serial control, machine control, and SMPTE time-code functions. The TOC houses 125 equipment racks providing space for a control system for studio and post-production; 200 stereo-audio distribution amplifiers; 325 video distribution amplifiers; a 2,880-position video patchbay; and a 3,380-position stereo audio patch field. The camera control center supports a total of 27 cameras, assignable to any studio. Linking the entire production and technical complex is a cable management system consisting of more than 50,000 meters (165,000 ft) of 8281 double-shielded coax cable; 106,000 meters (350,000 ft) of 8451 shielded audio cable; 5,000 meters (17,000 ft) of serial control cable; and 12,000 meters (40,000 ft) of triax camera cable. Post-production facilities include six computer-edit-equipped suites, with the 28 VTRs assignable to any suite. There are also an additional 18 A/B roll-edit suites. Each of the eight studios is equipped with a minimum of three cameras, with the capability of expansion to six cameras each. Individual studio control rooms include dual mix/effects switchers; dual channel DVE systems; 24-channel stereo-audio mixing boards; dual channel character generators; multichannel facility intercom; and remote serial machine control. New studio lighting includes remote-controlled motorized battens and a 3,200K SCR programmable lighting control system. This alleviated the requirement for lengthy testing and troubleshooting at the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Manila.

ABS-CBN’s facility is among the most sophisticated broadcast centers in the Pacific Rim and among the most modern in the world. It is capable of producing and airing multiple, simultaneous live and recorded productions (from and to any part of the world). The enhancement and digitalization of the Broadcast Center has enabled the network to respond to a diverse market’s rapidly growing demand for a greater variety of broadcast programming.

These two largest networks in the Philippines, the GMA7 and ABS-CBN2, are open to public, specifically to students who might want to learn more about communication systems.

When you say having a field trip in Manila, most likely, students would think of shopping malls and other big-time business establishments. But surely, there’s more to that. We’ve got some of Manila’s tourist destinations on the list.

For those who would like to relive the old Manila – its culture and history- you can start with Casa Manila, a museum showcasing the lives of Filipinos during the Spanish colonization and how a residence looked like during those times. Another house-like setting is the Bahay Tsinoy, a museum of dioramas depicting the culture of our Filipino-Chinese ancestors back in the days. It’s like having a quick tour of the mainland China without actually going there.

To make a more remarkable trip to the past, here are more educational museums for students to go to. San Agustin Museum houses a collection of religious artifacts. For art enthusiasts, the National Museum Art Gallery is a must-see where the Spoliarium, the great Juan Luna’s masterpiece, is displayed. For graders, there’s Museo Pambata, an interactive museum that ensures fun learning for kids. Adding to the list is the National Museum of the Filipino People where students could learn more about the lives of ethnic groups in the Philippines as represented on the dioramas and the exhibit of artifacts from the Spanish galleon, San Diego.

Your exploration of the old Manila won’t be complete without setting your feet on Fort Santiago. Imbibe whether the melancholy of Jose Rizal or the nationalistic pride within, the authenticity of the fort is a rewarding end to your historic flight.

Learning about our heritage upholds patriotism for our culture is one of the richest among nations. There are still some notable places around the metro you could include into your itineraries such as the Ayala Museum (Greenbelt Park, Makati City) which displays the works of the National Artists of the Philippines, historic dioramas, and galleon models on varying exhibit schedules. Next one is the Metropolitan Museum (Pasay City) whose main attraction is its array of gold and pottery and a collection of contemporary artworks.

Some frequently visited destinations are the Money Museum (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Quezon City), the Manila Ocean Park, and the Planetarium (both in One Rizal Park, Luneta, Manila). For various options, there are some locations in Quezon City and Marikina you might as well include to your list.

The Doll Museum in Marikina attracts sightseers because of the 48 dioramas which visually relate the important events that took place on this then affluent hacienda during the Spanish era.

You think Science theories and principles are totally boring? Not if you would learn them in the Science Centrum (Marikina City). This is an interactive museum that presents optical illusions and satisfies students’ curiosity about the different wonders of the Science.

Sited at the heart of Quezon City is the Quezon Memorial Monument that serves as the landmark of the city museum located below this marble monument. A perfect ending for your city tour is the La Mesa Eco Park which is famous for the envigorating ambience it offers. Situated in the city’s main water reservoir, this ecological park is a great final destination for the refreshing vibe you could indulge yourself with after hours on tour.

Learning through exposure keeps knowledge intact in one’s mind longer than you think. So, mark these places on your travel guide and plan for your students’ next trip!
